Calgary police are investigating after a body was reportedly found in a wall at the Core Shopping Centre in downtown Calgary Monday morning.

Officers were called to the women’s washroom on the fourth floor of the shopping centre at about 9:30 a.m.

Police told Global News the body of an adult male was found when maintenance crews were called to fix a toilet that wouldn’t flush in a women’s washroom and opened up a wall.

They said the death is not considered criminal in nature. More information will be available once an autopsy is done but police said it’s possible that someone crawling through a vent or duct fell from above and got stuck in the wall.

“If you were to look at the toilet, there’s a panel behind it so that when people move, it would automatically flush,” Calgary police spokesperson Emma Poole said in an interview with The Canadian Press.

“There was some sort of issue with the toilet so maintenance was called in to try to fix that and when they removed that panel they found a deceased person behind that wall.”

The medical examiner was on scene as of noon, along with the fire department.

In an emailed statement, the Core said it was investigating the incident in conjunction with the Calgary Police Service.
