History
The Squamish people were first to inhabit the area that would one day encompass the district.
The word “Squamish” means “mother of the wind.”
Europeans arrived in the area around 1888, and farmed hops there.
Industry in Squamish would come to be dominated by logging; it would also become the site of a deep-sea port.
Tourism is strong in Squamish, a place known for outdoor recreation in areas such as the Stawamus Chief, a rock face that towers over the community.
It’s also a bedroom community for Whistler, and it’s gradually attracting more Vancouverites who are being pushed out of the city by high housing prices.
