History
A Spanish explorer first sighted Delta in 1791 — thinking it an island, he called it “Isla Capeda.”
Settlers came amid the Gold Rush of 1858.
Some saw the potential for farming in the Fraser River delta, and vowed to return when they had finished searching for gold.
Fishing and farming would become the backbone of Delta’s economy. Salmon canning happened commercially for the first time on Canada’s west coast close to Annieville, and a cannery would be built on Deas Island as well.
Yet another cannery was build on the northern side of Chilukthan Slough.
Delta was incorporated in 1879, and the municipality was administered from Ladner.
