Londoners are continuing to show their support for the community of Humboldt, Sask.
In a movement that has gained support around the world, a large number of people in the city wore jerseys to work or school, to support the family and friends who were impacted by the tragic bus crash last week.
Julia Salvador works at a hair salon and says she and her co-workers wanted to find a way to pay tribute to the families that were affected.
“We actually have our sticks out today in front of the salon, and I’m wearing my jersey to support the hockey team that last week got into the accident.”
“It’s really nice to see everyone else wearing their jerseys and showing their support as well.”
Chau Trinh wore a volleyball jersey to mark the occasion.
“Now I wish I could have put out some hockey sticks as well, but we’re not a hockey family, so we don’t have hockey sticks. It’s amazing the support you see everywhere, not just here but across the country and in other countries as well. It’s amazing.”
Jeff Davidson was wearing a Toronto Maple Leafs jersey and says it’s the least he can do.
“I work at a bank and it’s very formal, so even being able to wear a hockey jersey to support,” said Davidson.
“You see people you wouldn’t expect who are wearing a jersey. It’s amazing driving down the streets and seeing the houses, the number of sticks you see in front of people’s houses.”
On April 6, the Humboldt Broncos were headed north to Nipawin for a playoff game when their bus collided with a semi truck at a remote intersection near Tisdale, Sask.
Sixteen passengers have died as a result of the collision. Thirteen others were also injured. The driver of the semi-truck was uninjured.
It has not been determined what caused the crash.
