Power pole fires keep thousands of Calgarians in the dark Thursday

Power pole fires caused outages in different parts of Calgary on Thursday morning.

Carol Henke from the city said fire crews responded to five power pole fires as of about 9:30 a.m. :

  • 12 Castlebrook Rd N.E.
  • 1035 64 Ave S.E.
  • 3028 5 Street S.W.
  • Heritage and Hamlet Road S.W.
  • 7412 23 Street S.E.

Enmax reported a total of seven fires as of noon.

“Our crews have been very busy this morning,” Enmax spokesperson Gina Sutherland said.

Sutherland added extra crews were brought in to deal with the outages.

A pole fire Thursday morning at Heritage Drive and Hamlet Road S.W. caused a road closure as crews worked to restore power.

“I woke up to two massive banging noises,” Bon Ogston said. “And then all the power was out.”

About 1,641 customers were impacted in the Kelvin Grove, Haysboro, Glenmore Park, Eagle Ridge and Chinook Park areas, according to the Enmax website.

Electricity was out from about 7:30 a.m. to about 9 a.m. in that area

Sutherland said about 3,500 customers across Calgary were impacted by the outages Thursday.
