Wellington County OPP say a 16-year-old girl was struck by a ricocheting bullet during a dispute among family members on Saturday night in Erin, Ont.

Police said a man was involved in a dispute with three other relatives when a gun was fired and the girl suffered minor injuries to her arm.

Officers were called to a home on Mountainview Crescent at around 8 p.m. but the suspect had already left. He was located and arrested a short time later.

“When he was located, he was charged with impaired [driving], so alcohol did play a part in this,” said Const. Marylou Schwindt. “But as to what went on in that home, we can’t disclose that right now.”

The 58-year-old man was charged with eight other offences including careless use of a firearm and assault with a weapon.

Police wouldn’t say what the relationship is between the suspect and the victim in order to protect her identity.

OPP are reminding residents that there are several local resources when it comes to getting help with abusive relationships, including Guelph-Wellington Victim Services and Guelph-Wellington Women in Crisis.

“Even if you know someone you suspect is in an abusive relationship, we really encourage you to reach out to these organizations because they can help educate and we all know education can lead to prevention,” Schwindt said.
