Saskatoon hosts 2013 University Cup

SASKATOON – Six of the best university hockey teams in Canada are meeting at Credit Union Centre this week for the 2013 PotashCorp University Cup presented by Co-op.

Fans will be filling up to 15,000 seats at Credit Union Centre over four days of Saskatoon hospitality and intense hockey action.

This coming Sunday, the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) University Cup will be hoisted high above either the Golden Bears, the Varsity Reds, les Patriotes, the Warriors,  Saint Mary’s Huskies or the U of S Huskies.

Saskatchewan’s Huskies won the University Cup once before in 1983 and were Canada West champions last year after a triple overtime victory at Rutherford Rink.

After travelling to the Maritimes for the 2012 UCup, the Saskatchewan Huskies men’s hockey team will have the luxury of playing on near-home ice this time around.

They face tough competition especially after losing the Canada West championship last week to the University of Alberta Golden Bears, who have held the national trophy 13 times, more than any other team.

The McGill Redmen will not be defending their title this year but 2011’s winner and previous host the Varsity Reds should be ready to go at Thursday’s puck drop.

It’s only fitting that Saskatchewan’s opening game is against the last team to host the tournament, the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds.
