Toronto gay magazine FAB to close

TORONTO – A long-running Toronto gay magazine will cease publication next month, it was announced Tuesday. FAB will publish its last issue on April 24 after nearly two decades in business.

“The realities of the print publication world have finally taken their toll on our free glossy,” editor Phil Villeneuve explained in a message posted on FAB‘s website.

He said parent company Pink Triangle Press, which acquired FAB in 2008, “simply can’t afford to keep the magazine running.”

Launched on July 1, 1994 by Michael Schwarz and Keir MacRae, FAB eventually expanded its distribution across Canada. At its peak, it attracted mainstream advertisers like AGF, Evian, Jaguar and Tide to its pages but in its latter years relied heavily on ads for porn websites.

The format of FAB also changed over the years — both the physical appearance of the magazine and its editorial content. In the late ’90s and early 2000s, celebrities and politicians frequently graced its covers.

Villeneuve said the magazine was “committed to having a good time and letting boys across the city, and for a time across the country, know how great it is to be gay.”

The demise of FAB leaves the city with gay publications IN Toronto and Outlooks as well as Xtra!.
