Officer breaks hand pursuing suspect following dramatic crash west of downtown London

A 25-year-old is facing charges following a crash at the intersection of Wharncliffe Road North and Riverside Drive late Wednesday morning.

London police say they were investigating a stolen vehicle around 11:30 a.m. Thursday, when they saw a man enter the vehicle they were investigating.

They say the man noticed the police nearby and fled.

Shortly after, the vehicle ran into the sign of a Mexican restaurant at the corner of Wharncliffe Road and Riverside Drive.

Police say following the crash, the suspect attempted to flee on foot and was arrested a short distance away. The suspect has minor injuries from the collision, while an officer suffered a broken hand during the foot chase.

A 25-year-old man is charged with the following Criminal Code of Canada offences:

  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
  • Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
  • Fail to stop at the scene of an accident (two counts)
  • Possession of break-in instruments
  • Resist arrest

The Special Investigations Unit was notified but did not invoke its mandate due to the nature of the injuries.

The truck belongs to Fournier Heating and Air Conditioning in Komoka and was reported stolen early Wednesday morning.
