Peter Hansen and his employees are hard at work. As a courier service, they’re usually busy delivering boxed packages, but on Wednesday, they did something a little different.

“We got a few trucks that we were able to use and decided to start picking up furniture from people that were donating all across the West Island and hand it off to folks, refugees, single mothers, whoever needs some help,” said Hansen, owner of QA Courier.

Global News first met Hansen last month, after he jumped in to help out On Rock community services.

The truck that the Pierrefonds food bank used for deliveries had broken down, and after hearing about it, he stepped in and offered to do their deliveries for them.

Since then, Hansen says he was inspired to do more.

“There were so many people that you can see were needing stuff,” said Hansen. “So I started to make posts [on Facebook] asking if there was anybody that wanted to donate furniture, and all of a sudden, boom — it exploded.”

“Tons of people were offering couches, kitchen tables — whatever you can use in a house, people were offering it.”

For the last few weeks, Hansen and his employees at QA Courier, have been picking up and dropping off furniture for those who need it.

“I needed household stuff and they kindly gave me a bed, microwave, blender, a couch,” said Nigerian refugee Augustine Ozegbe. “They made my life so comfortable — my kids are very very happy about it.”

So happy that it inspired him to do the same.

“When you see these kinds of people with this kind of heart, you want to also contribute,” he said. “So I decided to sign up with them as a volunteer to also help others.”

Hansen says he and his team will continue to pick up and deliver furniture, as long as the donations keep coming in.

As for Ozegbe, his volunteer work with the courier service may be the start of something new.

Hansen says he’s looking forward to hiring him as a full-time employee as soon as he gets his work permit.
