A 39-year-old Toronto man accused of fatally shooting his 25-year-old girlfriend was remanded into custody and had his case put over until March 29 following a court appearance on Tuesday.
Joseph Chang, who was charged with first-degree murder in the death of Alicia Lewandowski, was brought to a Brampton, Ont., court wearing a grey sweatshirt and grey sweatpants.
He showed no emotion in court and no family members were present.
“This is a very tragic case involving the murder of this young woman,” Chang’s lawyer Daniel Kayfetz told Global News.

“I was told that it’s been said this is a domestic. This case is not what it seems and that will all come out later on after the Crown attorney’s done their work on it.”

Details of the accusations have been placed under a publication ban.
Peel Regional Police said the victim was found fatally shot around 5 a.m. Monday outside of a townhouse complex near the area of Rathburn and Dixie roads in Mississauga.

Chang was arrested just before 7:45 p.m. at a McDonald’s restaurant at Dufferin Street and King Street West in Toronto following a police manhunt.
Police have not released any details regarding the motive for the shooting.
