Officials west of Edmonton are asking residents to stay clear after a gas leak was reported in the High Park neighbourhood of Stony Plain, Alta.
A news release from the Town of Stony Plain says a contractor was installing new traffic lights at the intersection of Highway 628 and Westerra Drive/High Park Road. A gas line in the intersection was struck.
RCMP said the gas will be shut off for several hours and may not be restored until 11 p.m.
High Park Road to Highridge Way and Westerra Drive to Westerra Boulevard are closed, as well as Highway 628 from Golf Course Road to Highway 779. People are asked to avoid the area.
The RCMP is diverting 79 Avenue between Willow Way and Gold Course Road, as well as 79 Avenue and Westerra Drive.
The town added that schools and Parkland Transportation are being notified of the closures.

At 3:55 p.m. the town said the fire department gave the all-clear for bussing as usual at both High Park School and Memorial Composite High School. RCMP were restricting access to busses and parents only. Road closures were still in effect.
RCMP said buildings within a 500-foot radius of the leak have been safely evacuated. The town said houses in the general area of the gas line were checked by the fire department and no gas build up was detected.
ATCO was on scene working to shut off valves. The town said some digging will be required.
