Laval police arrested two members of an alleged theft ring whose hasty retreat from a botched shopping centre heist last August left stolen luggage strewn across the mall’s parking lot.

“They were surprised by a security agent at Carrefour Laval. They sped away without locking the back door,” said police spokesperson Evelyne Boudreau.

Police arrested Evens Riodin, 38, and Gabrielle De Morasse, 30, and charged them with multiple counts of theft and a count each of conspiracy stemming from 11 burglaries spread over six municipalities starting in 2016.

Police also say they have a third possible suspect they’re questioning.

The burglaries would involve chain stores like SAQ, Best Buy and Hudson’s Bay Company, and typically the thieves would steal high-end merchandise like champagne, liquor and drones for resale on the black market Boudreau said.

A total of almost $2 million worth of goods was stolen over two years, according to police. While they would not elaborate on the methods of the theft, police spokespersons did mention the suspects would use alarm access codes to enter stores after their regular business hours.
