Lifesaving moments happen regularly at the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute in Edmonton. All day on Wednesday, donors helped that lifesaving care continue.

This year, the annual 630 CHED Heart Pledge Day, raised more than $157,000 for the University Hospital Foundation to support the care given at the Mazankowski.

Throughout the day, patients whose lives have been saved at the Mazankowski shared their stories live on air. Doctors who perform the care will also be featured.

In the past, money raised has gone to expand the cardiovascular intensive care unit, buying portable life-support equipment for patients so sick they wouldn’t make it to the hospital alive without it, and purchasing a specialized cooling system that protects the brains of heart attack patients by lowering their body temperature.

This year, funds will go to support “high priority needs” at the hospital.
