Calgary police believe the driver of an SUV involved in a collision and rollover in the downtown core on Wednesday may have been impaired by drugs.
Police said the vehicle was travelling along 9 Avenue when it sideswiped another vehicle coming out of a parkade.
It then sped up and crashed into the rear end of a truck waiting at the intersection.
“The force of the collision caused the Toyota RAV4 to flip onto its roof,” Calgary police said in a release.
The 30-year-old driver was extracted from the SUV and taken to hospital in life-threatening condition. He’s since been upgraded to serious but stable condition.
“Investigators at the scene gathered evidence which leads them to believe that the driver of the RAV4 may have been impaired by drugs,” police said.
9 Avenue was closed for a portion of the afternoon as the traffic unit investigated the crash.
Police said the investigation is ongoing.
