Calgary weather: extreme cold warning ended, temperatures set to rise on weekend

An extreme cold warning has ended for Calgary, but that doesn’t mean temperatures are set to rise in the immediate future.

The warning was issued Thursday morning, with Environment Canada forecasting a “multi-day episode of very cold wind chills.”

Despite the warning being issued, temperatures in the city are still expected to hover around the -25 C mark through the night and only warm up to a high of -15 C on Friday.

The weekend will bring some reprieve for Calgarians, though, as Saturday and Sunday are expected to get highs of -1 C and -2 C.

Extreme cold warnings are issued when very cold temperatures or wind chill creates an elevated risk to health such as frostbite and hypothermia.

“Extreme cold puts everyone at risk,” Environment Canada warned. “Watch for cold-related symptoms: shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes.”
