London police officer given conditional discharge, probation after pleading guilty to assault

A London police officer has pleaded guilty to a count of assault.

In a statement from the London Police Service on Thursday afternoon, officials said Sgt. Peter Paquette entered the plea in the case on Wednesday, Dec. 20.

Paquette was handed a conditional discharge and sentenced to probation for two years.

Paquette was charged in June of this year by the London Police Service in connection with an incident investigators said occurred at police headquarters on Sept. 6, 2016. He was placed on administrative duty.

The London Police Service says its Professional Standards Branch is conducting an internal investigation as is standard practice whenever a criminal charge is laid against an officer and Paquette will remain on administrative duty pending its disposition.

Paquette is among eight London police officers charged this year. Three officers have seen the counts against them withdrawn, including one this week.

On Tuesday, Dec. 19 the Crown withdrew a charge of assault causing bodily harm against Cst. Omar Hassan.
