Residents on Beach Avenue near the bridge say they heard an explosion just after 1 a.m.

Police said an Audi R8 was heading north on the bridge before the driver lost control, crossed the centre line and hit a taxi heading southbound.

Witnesses said the Audi flipped, broke apart and burst into flames with the wreckage spreading all over the road.

Before firefighters arrived, the witnesses in the cab stopped and helped pull the driver of the other cab out and away from the flames.

“People that were first on the scene should be commended for their bravery in getting that man out of that taxi,” one witness, who did not want to be identified, told Global News.
