RCMP in Revelstoke commended a 12-year-old girl for how she handled a man who she said approached her in what police called a “possible attempted child abduction” on Monday.

Police learned of the incident from Columbia Park Elementary School at 10:44 a.m. on Monday, said a news release.

They spoke to a 12-year-old girl who said she was walking to school on Nelson Crescent when a man approached her in a small, black four-door car.

The girl said this man drove toward her and said he was there on her mother’s behalf so that he could take her home.

This man then allegedly left the car. The girl declined his offer and ran home.

The man was described as being First Nations, 5’11” tall, aged 30 to 40 years old.

He was wearing a black, “Carhart”-style jean jacket over a black hooded sweater with the hood up.

In commending the girl, the RCMP suggested that young people travel in groups, not talk to strangers and report any suspicious activity to an adult and police.

Police want to speak with anyone who might have been a witness to this incident, and they’re asked to call the Revelstoke RCMP at (250) 837-5255.
