The City of Saskatoon is reminding people to keep waste reduction and recycling options in mind during the holidays.

City officials said people can help extend the life of the landfill and help the community move towards 70 per cent waste diversion by 2023 by remembering a few tips.

Here are some tips to help keep the holiday season green:

  • reduce one-time wrapping waste by using reusable gift bags or recyclable boxes;
  • consider using recyclable wrapping paper or reusing old newspapers;
  • metal cookie containers are reusable and recyclable;
  • give milk and egg nog containers a quick rinse and flatten out before recycling. They can be taken to SARCAN or put blue carts or bins at home;
  • have a look at the bottom of plastic containers. If there’s a number between 1 and 7, rinse it and pop it in recycling; and
  • unwanted electronics can be dropped off at any SARCAN depot.

How to manage space in carts and bins?

  • Excess recycling can be dropped at one of the city’s recycling depots (Lawson Heights, Lakewood, University Heights and  Meadowgreen), as well as the Loraas and Cosmopolitan Industries recycling depots;
  • Flatten boxes and packaging;
  • Consider storing clean, dry recyclables until the next collection day;
  • Visit Love Food Hate Waste online for tips on reducing food waste;

All single-family households will receive an extra garbage pick-up between Dec. 26 and 30 this holiday season to help manage the extra waste.

There will be no garbage or recycling collection on Christmas or New Year’s Day. People with regular collection on these days will have their carts picked up the following Saturday.

The garbage collection schedule can be viewed online here.
