RCMP in central Alberta said following a two-vehicle collision Wednesday morning, a second man died after he was taken hospital.

Rimbey RCMP, along with EMS and firefighters, were called to the crash on Highway 22 at Highway 53 at 6:46 a.m.

Investigators believe a truck travelling west on Highway 53 collided with a northbound truck on Highway 22. Traffic on Highway 22 has the right-of-way, while Highway 53 has a stop sign before turning into a gravel road on the other side of the intersection.

Two men who were sitting on the passenger side of the northbound truck were killed. One of them died on scene, while the other passed away later in the afternoon after being taken to hospital.

Both men — one of them 34, the other 36 years old — were from Rocky Mountain House. The 41-year-old man who was driving that truck was also taken to hospital, but has since been released.

The 24-year-old woman who was driving the westbound truck — and the only person inside the vehicle — remains in hospital with serious injuries, police said on Thursday.

“The RCMP offers sincere condolences to the family and friends of all the people involved in this collision,” Rimbey RCMP Sgt. Kurtis Pillipow said.

“We know that it is tragic any time to lose a loved one, or have a loved one injured; but this time of year is especially difficult and we offer our support to all.”

Mounties said the collision remains under investigation and they had not yet determined whether charges would be laid.

The intersection where the collision happened is about 45 kilometres west of Rimbey and about 180 kilometres southwest of Edmonton.
