Gotye, The Black Keys among Grammy winners

TORONTO – The 55th Grammy Awards honoured the best in music on Sunday night at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles.

One of the night’s big winners was Australian singer Gotye, who picked up three awards, including Alternative Music Album (Making Mirrors) and both Record of the Year and Group/Duo Performance for the infectious hit with Kimbra, “Somebody That I Used To Know.”

Jay-Z and Kanye West also picked up three awards.

The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach went home with four Grammys – three with his band and one as Producer of the Year.

Last year’s big winner, Adele, picked up a Grammy for Pop Solo Vocal Performance for “Set Fire to the Rain.” She later presented the Album of the Year award to Mumford & Sons.

Pop band fun. surprised many by claiming both Song of the Year (“We Are Young”) and Best New Artist. The group also performed “Carry On” during the show.

Two former American Idol winners performed and received awards – Carrie Underwood for Country Solo Performance and Kelly Clarkson for Pop Vocal Album.

Frank Ocean went to Sunday’s show with six nominations but went home with only two – Urban Contemporary Album and Rap/Sung Collaboration. The 25-year-old singer thanked his mother, who was in the audience.

All of Canada’s nominees lost in their categories except Drake, who won Rap Album for Take Care – one of three awards he was up for Sunday. It was the first Grammy for the Toronto rapper, who has been nominated 12 times since 2010.

The Grammys show kicked off with Taylor Swift performing an Alice In Wonderland-themed version of “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” and ended with host LL Cool J performing with Travis Barker, Chuck D, Tom Morello and DJ Z-Trip.

Performers included Underwood and Clarkson as well as Rihanna, Jack White, Justin Timberlake, Mumford & Sons, The Lumineers, Juanes, and The Black Keys.

Musical collaborations on stage include Miranda Lambert with Dierks Bentley; Elton John with Ed Sheeran; Alicia Keys with Maroon 5; Miguel with Wiz Khalifa; and Bruno Mars with Sting and Rihanna.

Stanley Clarke, Chick Corea and Kenny Garrett paid tribute to Dave Brubeck while Zac Brown, Elton John, Mumford & Sons and Mavis Staples honoured the late Levon Helm.
