“Multiple cougar sightings” have led Alberta Parks to close the Yamnuska day-use area at the base of Mount Yamnuska, about 80 kilometres west of Calgary.

The closure, issued on Tuesday, includes the day-use area, trail and trailhead as well as the area north of Quarry Road and west of the Yamnuska Trail.

“Multiple cougar sightings and animal carcass in closed area nearby,” the closure states, adding the cougar was spotted feeding on the carcass.

Alberta Parks reminded visitors that wildlife, including cougars and bears, can be encountered anywhere at any time in Kananaskis Country, and gave the following tips for avoiding an unexpected encounter with cougars or other animal:

  • Make plenty of noise and travel in groups
  • Be aware of your surroundings. Look and listen for wildlife and their signs
  • Keep your pet on a leash
  • Carry bear spray, make sure it’s easily accessible, and know how to use bear spray (video)
