Montreal police arson squad investigating fire in Pointe-aux-Trembles

The Montreal police arson squad is investigating a fire in a hair salon at the corner of Sherbrooke Street East and 47th Avenue in Pointe-Aux-Trembles. Montreal fire say they received a 911 call at 12:30 a.m. Thursday about the fire.

Fire officials say the fire was put out the blaze fairly, but traces of accelerants were found in the shop. They handed the investigation over to the Montreal police arson squad.

The shop sustained major damage, an apartment complex above was not damaged.

Twenty residents were evacuated from 12 units during the fire. There were no injuries.

“Witnesses said they saw a man break in through the back door of the shop,” said Montreal police spokesperson Caroline Chevrefils.

“The man was seen throwing an incendiary object through the front window before fleeing the scene.”

No arrests were made and police set up a perimeter as they investigated the scene.

The residents of the apartment complex were allowed back into their homes after the fire was put out.
