Nenshi’s victory comes after an election campaign that political analysts said was particularly divisive.

During the campaign, Nenshi raised concerns about so-called bots and online trolls using racist and hateful comments to derail the election.
He also faced criticism for a comment he made alleging mayoral hopeful Bill Smith had taken an illegal donation from the Edmonton Oilers group.
Nenshi had been trailing Smith in polls by Mainstreet Research and Common Sense Calgary that were released ahead of the election. At the time, political analyst Duane Bratt said there appeared to be an anti-Nenshi vote that was “coalescing around Bill Smith.”
This is Nenshi’s third term in office, having been elected as Calgary’s 36th mayor in 2010. He was reelected for a second term in 2013.
According to the City of Calgary, the 2017 Calgary election had a total voter turnout of 387,306 or 58.1 per cent, the highest voter turnout in over 40 years.
