A campaign showdown in the Montreal bedroom community of Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue is pitting the incumbent mayor against a former town councillor.
Paola Hawa is seeking a second term.
The lawyer who’s been running the city for the last four years says there is still a lot of unfinished business to complete.
One of her priorities is rebuilding the boardwalk that stretches the entire waterfront.
She also wants to work with the federal and provincial governments to protect the city from flooding.
Several home basements were flooded due to rising waters last spring and many restaurants suffered a loss of revenues as Lac Saint-Louis and Lac des Deux-Montagnes caused the popular Sainte-Anne’s boardwalk to be impassable.
Hawa also wants to preserve the green space in the northern part of town.
Sainte-Anne’s is being sued by developers because they can’t build as many single-family homes as they had planned.
Instead, condominiums will go up.
When asked what’s wrong with single-family homes, Hawa told Global News: “They’re going to take up too much of the green space.”
Hawa’s challenger is Lucie LaRose.
The former city councillor is trying to unseat Hawa.
Global News tried to contact LaRose several times but she never replied in time for deadline.
Voters go to the polls November 5th.
