Man arrested in connection with suspicious fires in Cape Breton

Police have arrested a 23-year-old man in connection with at least two suspicious fires this week in Sydney, N.S.

Three fires took place within a short time on Wednesday evening.

Officials were first called to a propane truck on fire on Kings Road around 7:30 p.m.

A vacant house went up in flames on George Street at 9:15 p.m., and a garage caught fire at 11 p.m on Kings Road.

Cape Breton Regional Police say when they arrived at the third scene they located a man in the area who matched the description of a man who was seen in the area during the first fire.

Officers arrested the man on suspicion of arson. He remains in police custody at this time, although no charges have been laid yet.

Officials say all three fires were contained and extinguished by Cape Breton Regional Fire Services.

There were no injuries reported at any of the incidents.

Police and the fire marshal’s office are continuing their investigation.
