In 2009: Raj Chouhan won this riding for a second straight time, defeating Liberal Lee Rankin by over 2000 votes, 52-38%.

History & Geography: Created in 1966, Burnaby-Edmonds is the south-easternmost of Burnaby’s ridings, bordered by Boundary, Imperial, and 4th street. An NDP stronghold, it has gone to the party in 12 of the last 15 elections. The NDP’s history in this riding can be seen by the New Vista Care Home on Edmonds, named for Ernest Winch, the CCF MLA for Burnaby from 1933-1957.

Odds and Ends: A riding with many eastern European immigrants, more people speak Albanian, Bosnian, and Macedonian here than anywhere else in the province. 53.2% of people were immigrants in 2006, 8th highest in the province.

Candidates

Liberals-Jeff Kuah: A former academic advisor at Kwantlen, Kuah specializes in overseas student recruitment, speaking five languages. Kuah ran for Burnaby School Board in 2011, but finished 20th out of 23 candidates.

NDP-Raj Chouhan: The shadow critic for multiculturalism, immigration, and human rights., Chouhan is originally from India. He was the founding president of the Canadian Farmworkers’ Union and served as a director of the Hospital Employees Union.

Greens-Wyatt Tessari: A Quebec candidate for the Greens in the last federal election (receiving 1.5% of the vote), Tessari recently graduated from the mechanical engineering program at the École Polytechnique de Montréal. He lived in the U.S. and Europe growing up.

Excalibur Party-Nicholas D’Amico: D’Amico is one of six candidates running for the BC Excalibur Party.
