Tom Petty’s daughter confirms father’s death in new Instagram post

UPDATE: 9:20 p.m. — Tom Petty has died, his manager confirmed on Monday night.

Petty’s death was also confirmed in a post on an Instagram account that has been attributed to his daughter Annakim Violette.

The account had earlier slammed erroneous reports that Petty had died before his longtime manager confirmed the news on Monday night.

The New York Times reported that erroneous news about Petty’s death first emerged from CBS, which broke the story with a “JUST IN” banner and cited the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) as its source.

CBS News later published an article saying it had confirmed Petty’s death, and many other organizations including Slate, Entertainment Weekly and Global News followed up with their own stories.

Several celebrities and other social media users offered their condolences over Petty’s death before the LAPD tweeted that it had “no information” about the singer.

Petty was hospitalized on Sunday after he was found unconscious in cardiac arrest.

He was later placed on life support at UCLA Santa Monica Hospital.

Violette issued a series of tributes to her father on what she called “the longest day of my life.”
