SFU criminology prof says Marpole double murder likely ‘failed break-and-enter’

An SFU criminology professor believes a “failed break-and-enter” was likely what led to a double homicide in Vancouver earlier this week.

Rob Gordon said that if it was a random attack, chances are it started off as a break-and-enter.

“There are a number of scenarios that are possible, but certainly home invasion gone wrong is right there at the top of the list.”

On Wednesday, police officers were called to a home on West 64th Avenue near Hudson Street, and found 68-year-old Dianna Mah-Jones and 68-year-old Richard Jones dead.

Vancouver police haven’t been able to confirm the motive of the murders, but says all evidence leads them to believe it was a random attack.

“[It’s not] unusual for a case like this to take some time to pull together,” said Gordon.

“It doesn’t mean to say that they don’t already have a pretty good idea of what happened and even possibly a pretty good idea of who was involved.”

Forensic investigators returned to the Marpole home on Saturday.
