The City of Surrey opened its door to wildfire evacuees this summer, and now we know what it cost.

The Cloverdale Arena on 176th Street was open for 48 days, and recieved 4,000 people forced from their homes in the interior.

The facility closed on August 30.

Information received through the City of Surrey’s Freedom of Information office states that keeping the arena open required 3,200 hours of city staff time.

The total cost of running the facility came to $138,000.

Facility rental for Emergency Management BC use was $12,000, and there was also a cleaning bill of $1,600.

Emergency Management BC will be reimbursing the city for expenses.

More than 1.2 million hectares of land were burned during this year’s record wildfire season.

At the peak of the fires, more than 65,000 people were evacuated from their homes across the province.
