N.S. police watchdog investigating after man falls off Cape Breton overpass and dies

The Nova Scotia Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) is investigating the death of a man in Cape Breton.

Police were called to a possible altercation on the overpass of Highway 125 at the end of Upper Prince Street in Sydney, N.S. at around 5 p.m. on Thursday.

SiRT says a member of the Cape Breton Regional Police responded to the call and once on scene, encountered two men on the overpass.

After the officer arrived, SiRT says a 27-year-old man fell from the overpass and died.

Following the incident, the Cape Breton Regional Police contacted SiRT, who is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia, whether or not there is an allegation of wrongdoing. All investigations are under the direction of Ron MacDonald, an independent civilian director.

Three SiRT investigators are now in Sydney and looking into the incident.
