They have also released a photo of the cargo van, and want to speak to any motorists who were on Highway 2 between Moncton and Memramcook between 5:45 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday.

It’s believed Const. Francis Deschênes, who was on duty with Amherst’s Northwest Traffic Services, had pulled over on the side of the highway to help two people in an SUV change a tire.

Police say a cargo van collided with Deschênes’ police car and the SUV.

Deschênes was pronounced dead at the scene, while the two people in the SUV were taken to hospital and released.
