One Omemee couple is holding their breath as Hurricane Irma batters Florida’s coastline.
Rick and Barb Cobbett spent four months in the Sunshine State last year. The couple owns an RV at a trailer park south of Tampa Bay.
“We’ve been really crazy these past 10 or whatever days, just watching the news and thinking we were going to get hammered,” Barb said.
Right now, the couple doesn’t know if their trailer has been damaged. Barb says friends are checking on the situation and providing them with updates.
But as the storm rages down south, the couple says they’re not in a hurry to get down there and see the situation themselves.
“We’re not being flip, we’re just trying to take it one day at a time, see how it goes,” she said.
But they’re not the only ones keeping an eye on the storm.
Agents at Carlson Wagonlit are fielding calls from travellers who don’t know whether to pack their bags or cancel their trips.
Dana Empey said there’s been a lack of information from some resort islands hard hit by the hurricane. Right now, Empey says agents are telling travellers to hold off on booking trips to popular destinations like Cuba and St. Martin.
It also means areas unaffected by the hurricane are going to become more popular, busier, and more expensive, she said.
“The prices have already started skyrocketing for Aruba because Aruba, Curacao, Bonaire, the ABC islands, are out of the hurricane belt,” she said.
