In honour of the City of Winnipeg’s bi-annual Give Away Weekend , here’s five easy ways to get rid of your stuff without throwing it in a landfill.
If you want to see your items re purposed into art, this is the place. Arts Junction will take vinyl records, trophies, wine corks, calendars, and basically anything they can re purpose into art. They run workshops focusing on crafting with repurposed materials and they make their donations available to teachers, artists, and anyone who wants to craft without harming the environment.
If you’ve got old electronics, Mother Earth Recycling is where you want to go. They want your old computers, televisions, printers, scanners and fax machines. Mother Earth will either refurbish and sell the items in their store, or properly recycle them. They also take mattresses and box springs. Mother Earth focuses on employing and training people from the Indigenous community.

There are many options if you’ve got clothes you no longer wear. If you have newer items or pieces that are still in style, another great option is Plato’s Closet. The consignment store will sort through your clothing and take whatever items they deem in style for their demographic. Don’t expect to get much money out of the deal, but if you’re looking for a little bit of cash, Plato’s is a good option. Places like Value Village will also happily take more than just clothes. They want your unwanted furniture, kitchen appliances, home decor, and just about anything else you’ve got. Most donation centers are affiliated with a charity of some sort so you can feel good about where your stuff is going.
Possibly the easiest way to get rid of stuff, if you don’t mind spending some money, is 1800 Got Junk or other similar companies. They usually provide quick, same day service and they’ll whisk away whatever you ask them to. They take everything from hot tubs, to old carpeting.
5. Habitat for Humanity’s Re-Store
We love to renovate our homes, and with that comes left over materials that often end up in landfills. The Re-Store accepts used materials as well as new ones. It’s a great place to find building materials at a cheap cost, not to mention one of kind items.
