Northern Saskatchewan under air quality advisory

An air quality statement is in place for many parts of northern Saskatchewan due to smoke from wildfires.

An advisory that was in place for Lloydminster has ended.

Environment Canada said the smoke is causing poor air quality and reduced visibility and conditions are not likely to improve while the fires continue to burn.

There are currently 36 active fires in Saskatchewan, six of which are not contained and another six where fire crews are working to protect property and infrastructure.

People may experience symptoms such as increased coughing, throat irritation, headaches or shortness of breath.

The agency said wearing a mask is not the best way to protect health during a smoke event.

Officials said along with giving a false sense of security, it could make breathing more difficult.

Children, seniors, and those with cardiovascular or lung disease, such as asthma, are especially at risk from the poor air quality.

Officials said people experiencing breathing difficulties should stay indoors and find a place that is cool and ventilated.
