Officials save late night tubers from Capilano River
Five tubers had to be rescued from the Capilano River late Sunday night after they stayed out too late. Two other tubers walked out on their own. Jordan Armstrong has the details – Sep 4, 2017

Seven people are cold and wet but ultimately safe and sound after getting stuck in the Capilano River Sunday night.

District of North Vancouver Fire were called in at around 10 p.m, after the group became stranded in some low water while tubing, and couldn’t get themselves out of the canyon.

“They were uncomfortable continuing down the river, and obviously because of the steep, fairly treacherous nature of the canyon, unsure of their ability to extract themselves from the canyon,” says Assistant Chief Brian Hutchinson.

He had some advice for any would-be back country enthusiasts.

“To just be aware of the conditions of the rivers and the trails. Be aware of nightfall. Just take all those aspects into consideration.”

He says rescue crews made contact with the group in an inflatable boat before crews conducted a rope rescue.

He added none of them was hurt, though they were assessed by BC Ambulance as a precaution.

The rescue concluded at 1:15 a.m. Monday.
