Former Manitoba Bisons offensive lineman Geoff Gray won’t be joining the Winnipeg Blue Bombers anytime soon.

Gray is getting another chance at making an NFL roster after signing a contract to join the New York Jets practice squad. According to his agent Darren Gill, the two sides came together quickly when Gray became a free agent after he cleared waivers on Sunday.

“It’s been a whirlwind of emotions the last 24 hours.” Gill said. “It’s never easy to go through this the first time, but it’s been a learning experience for him.”

The 22-year-old Gray was released by the Green Bay Packers on Saturday.

Gray originally signed with the Packers as an undrafted priority free agent back in April. Gill said the Packers also showed interest in getting him on their practice roster but Gray felt the Jets would give him a better opportunity. The Jets were one of the teams that sent a scout to Gray’s pro day earlier this year.

“We had a decision to make between the Packers and the Jets, and in the end Geoff felt like the Jets would have been a better fit for him,” Gill said. “Although the Packers obviously showed their confidence in him by signing him and bringing him in, after looking at how the rosters were shaking down, Geoff felt maybe going to New York would be a better long term decision for his career.”

NFL practice roster players earn a minimum of $7,200 per week. If he is activated to the Jets’ 53-man roster, he would earn the NFL minimum salary of $465,000 per season.

The six foot five, 315 pound Gray played four seasons with the Bisons.
