Second-degree murder charge laid in Wetaskiwin homicide

A 22-year-old man has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of a 16-year-old boy in Wetaskiwin late last week.

At around 10:30 p.m. Thursday, police were called to a plaza in the area of 52 Street and 48 Avenue. The teenage boy, who has been identified as Nakoda Twoyoungmen, was found with serious injuries. He was taken to hospital, where he died.

Police said Monday Twoyoungmen’s death has been determined a homicide, although the cause of his death was not released. Twoyoungmen lived on the Samson Cree Nation, police said.

Matthew Alexander Lightning, of Wetaskiwin, was arrested on Friday and charged with one count of second-degree murder. He is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.
