Virginia State Police helicopter crashes near Charlottesville, killing two policemen

A Virginia State Police helicopter has crashed in a wooded area outside Charlottesville, Va., killing the pilot and a passenger.

Charlottesville-based newspaper The Daily Progress reported that the pair were killed after their helicopter went down near Birdwood Golf Course in Albemarle County.

The helicopter crashed after assisting in a police operation to subdue violent clashes at the rally; however, the exact cause of the crash was yet to be determined.

Earlier, emergency dispatch audio tweeted by ABC7 News reporter Kevin Lewis suggested that police from nearby Albemarle County were at the scene.

“ACPD [Albemarle County Police Department] on scene advising it is fully involved, unknown if any souls are still onboard,” a dispatcher is heard saying.

CBS North Carolina reported that emergency crews were at the scene of the crash.
