In a crushing twist of irony, a Peterborough charity — which provides medical transportation — destroyed an ambulance to promote its new fundraising campaign.
Global Angel Charitable Organization has teamed up with Nurse Scrap Metal scrapyard for “Crushing for a Cause.” The scrapyard will accept donations of metal and in return, turn over cash to Global Angel, a not-for-profit organization.
The discarded ambulance was donated by Angels of Flight, a charity which helps arrange transportation for Global Angel.
“We help with medical assisted transportation — air ambulance, commercial flights and ground,” Global Angel volunteer Nicole White said.

A typical air ambulance flight could range from $25,000 to $75,000, White added.
“We’re just trying to raise money because we don’t get any government funding,” White said.
Donors can call (705) 740-2645 to have their items picked up and Nurse Scrap Metal is located at 678 Erskine Avenue.
The fundraiser continues through Aug. 26 and will wrap up with a free barbecue, live music and more at the scrapyard from 8 a.m. to noon.
