2 Canadians among 57 injured in Peru tour bus crash that killed 9

Two Canadians are in hospital after a double-decker tour bus rolled over on a narrow road in the hills of Lima, Peru killing at least nine people and injuring 57 more.

Peru’s Ministry of Health says the accident Sunday night happened about two kilometres from the presidential palace in Lima. The health agency said in a statement the local bus was driving on San Cristobal hill to give the passengers a panoramic view of the city.

According to the agency, two Canadians were hospitalized as result of the crash.

Global Affairs Canada spokesperson Austin Jean confirmed to Global News the agency is assisting Canadians in Lima.

“Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with those affected by the tragic bus accident in Lima, Peru,” Jean said in statement. “Global Affairs Canada continues to follow the situation very closely and is making every effort to assist Canadian citizens in Lima. Global Affairs Canada is providing consular assistance to Canadian citizens that have been affected by the accident.”

No further details about the injured Canadians were released, including what province they are from.

Video shows the green, open-top bus clipping a curb, before toppling over and down an embankment.

It’s unclear what cause the crash, however, officials with the health ministry said the bus appeared to have been travelling at a high rate of speed.
