About a dozen people are out of their homes and several lost everything they own after a fire broke out at the Highland Motel in Penticton Friday afternoon.
Everyone escaped the fire safely due to working smoke detectors.
The fire started in a back unit on the main floor, according to Penticton Deputy Fire Chief Chris Forester.

The person living in that unit was asleep when the fire broke out but was awakened by the alarm.
RCMP and fire investigators are trying to find out how the blaze started.

The residents were moving from the motel today, but are now being taken care of by Emergency Social Services.
The motel is slated to be demolished next week.
