Swedish actor Michael Nyqvist has died at age 56.
On Tuesday, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo actor’s family released a statement announcing Nyqvist’s death.
A Swedish news agency claims the actor reportedly passed away on June 27 as a result of lung cancer.
Nyqvist is best known for his role as investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist in the Swedish-language The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Millennium series and as most recently as mob boss Viggo Tarasov in 2014’s John Wick starring Keanu Reeves.

Nyqvist spent much of the 1980s and 1990s on the Swedish stage before making the move to Hollywood, often playing the role of villain. With over 90 acting credits to his name in Hollywood and his native Sweden, Nyqvist appeared in notable roles such as the villainous nuclear scientist opposite Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Abduction with Taylor Lautner and alongside Emma Watson in the drama Colonia.
In 2004, he appeared in the Swedish dramedy As It Is In Heaven, which earned an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign-Language Film.
The actor most recently completed production on the Terrence Malick film Radegund about an Austrian war objector and a role in Hunter Killer, a movie about an American submarine captain that rescues the Russian President who has been kidnapped by a rogue general.
According to IMDB, Nyqvist was filming a role in the movie Kursk at the time of his death. The film is about the 2000 Kursk submarine disaster, directed by Danish filmmaker Thomas Vinterberg and co-starring Colin Firth. No word yet on whether the late actor was finished shooting his part in the movie before he passed away.
