Future of west end MacEwan building to be discussed at open house

WATCH ABOVE: The curtain will soon fall on MacEwan University's Jasper Place Campus. Since opening in 1980, the building has not only stood out for its distinctive colour, but for its focus on the arts. Vinesh Pratap filed this report in April 2017 – Apr 28, 2017

Once a bustling arts and communications campus, the vivid orange MacEwan West building now sits vacant because the Edmonton university has consolidated programs at its downtown campus.

Now the City of Edmonton is holding an open house to discuss the proposed rezoning of the facility to support a new vision for an inter-agency, intercultural community hub.

Earlier this year, the city issued a Request For Proposal (NRFP) for non-profit groups interested in leasing space in the landmark building on 100 Avenue and 156 Street.

The city is set to take ownership of the building in September 2017, five years after it began the work of setting out to buy it.

The city said rezoning the building will allow for a greater number of activities within the building including: art and culture programs, recreation, learning and wellness programs, not-for-profit office space, and small business services that support the overall vision.

The drop-in open house will be held Thursday from 4:30 to 8 p.m, in room #333 of the MacEwan West campus.
