UPDATE: Victoria man charged with first degree murder in ‘targeted’ shooting in Nanaimo

RCMP are continuing to investigate a shooting that a 34-year-old man dead in Nanaimo Wednesday morning.

Police said they responded to shots being fired at the Howard Johnson’s Hotel at 1 Terminal Ave. at 3:20 a.m. When they arrived, they found one person dead in the lobby of the hotel from apparent gun shot wounds.

About one hour later, a vehicle was stopped by North Cowichan Duncan RCMP officers and a male suspect was taken into custody.

Victoria resident Brandon Tyler Woody, 30, has been charged with one count of first degree murder and one count of possessing a firearm while prohibited to do so.

Woody is currently in custody and will appear in Nanaimo Provincial court on May 2.

Nanaimo RCMP Const. Gary O’Brien said the shooting appears to be targeted and investigators do not believe there is any risk to the public.

The Nanaimo RCMP Serious Crime Unit along with the BC Coroners Service and forensics and plain clothes RCMP officers are continuing the investigation.
