An Air Canada plane that had just taken off from Montréal-Trudeau airport to Shanghai, China Saturday was forced to turn around because of engine trouble.

The aircraft, a Boeing 787 with 213 passengers on board, had to unload some of its fuel over the Laurentians to land safely.

Passengers shared images of the operation on social media.

Airport firefighters were mobilized, but the plane returned safely shortly after 3 p.m.

“Our crew followed standard operating procedures and emergency response were called as a precautionary measure,” Air Canada spokesperson Isabelle Arthur said in a written statement to Global News.

The plane was towed off the runway and Arthur said the aircraft would undergo maintenance inspections.

As for the passengers on the flight, they’ll be re-routed to their final destination “as soon as possible,” according to Arthur.

On the Aéroports de Montréal website, it was reported on Saturday afternoon that the flight, AC17, whose initial departure had taken place around 1:30 p.m., had been delayed until 9:45 p.m.
