Many fishers were using the last weekend of ice-fishing season in southern New Brunswick to take their structures off the frozen water.
Despite frigid temperatures on Saturday, many were packing up their ice-fishing shacks until next year. The province of New Brunswick says all fishing shacks should be off the ice by March 13 in the southern part of the province, two days shorter than usual.
Some, like Bo Wang, were still fishing, however. Wang rents space for those who don’t have an ice shack of their own. It’s a new business venture for Wang, who immigrated from China two years ago.
Those who were closing up for the season say that despite a season of major temperature fluctuations, the fish were still biting.
Being good stewards of the environment is also essential, those who fish in the area note.

“They told us we had to move the shack off by Monday, and that’s what we try to do now, get this ice cleaned up so we can come back here next year,” Elmer Hebert said.
Ice shacks in the northern part of the province have another week before they have to be removed.
