A tractor-trailer rollover caused major traffic delays for commuters on Hwy. 401 for most of Friday afternoon.

Provincial police spokesperson Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said the transport was travelling southbound on Hwy. 427  and had taken the exit towards Hwy. 401 westbound around noon.

The transport, carrying steel coils, struck and rode against a guard rail before rolling onto Hwy. 401. Once on the westbound lanes, it also struck and pinned a pickup truck against the median.

OPP said the transport may have been travelling too fast for the ramp.

The area, including the southbound Hwy. 427 lanes, affected ramp and westbound collector lanes of Hwy. 401, were closed for several hours.

As of 4 p.m., OPP said the Hwy. 427 southbound ramp had reopened. The Hwy. 427 northbound ramp to the Hwy. 401 westbound collectors reopened after 5 p.m.
