Bag contained necessary material to create ‘low-level explosive device’: Saskatoon police

Saskatoon police said a bag containing suspicious items had the necessary material to create a “low-level explosive device,” including a Roman candle firework.

The back pack with the items was found on the ground by a patrol officer in the 200-block of 19th Street East at around 7:30 a.m. CT on Thursday.

An initial search turned up paint cans but further investigation determined the back pack contained explosive materials.

The bag was destroyed by members of the explosives disposal unit.

Police said there was no threat to public safety.

Testing of another suspicious object found during a search of the area continues.

Police are checking video surveillance to try to find the person who left the backpack,
